A Word On Mental Health Day
Let’s look at some facts.
According to the CDC & NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health):
1 in 6 children aged 2–8 years old has a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder.
1 in 5 adults lives with a mental illness.
Of the 1 in 5 adults, only HALF receive mental health services.
The point is that we can all think of someone who lives mentally distressed, and sometimes that person is us.
Let us not forget that it was only in 1949 that the lobotomy was invented and utilized as a panacea for cognitive dysfunctions. So at a minimum, from then to now, we have made significant improvements.
However, maybe it’s time we learn to live with ourselves.
I want to live in a world where our school systems include mental health as a subject matter to discuss, explore, and improve. Where the current mental health system is streamlined for ease of accessibility and OBVIOUSLY affordability.
Currently, the Health Resources and Services Administration states we are in a “Loneliness Epidemic.” HA… go figure. “That loneliness and social isolation can be as damaging as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.”
Let’s start prioritizing our well-being. Start small and let its momentum carry you onto those around you.
